Two weeks ago Irlanda and I both spoke at Our Sister School (OSS) in New Bedford. We are beginning to work towards deepening our connection to all schools that serve the youth and families in the neighborhoods in which we work in Fall River and New Bedford. To start, we were invited to OSS. I spoke on Tuesday 3/20 and Irlanda on Thursday 3/22. This was our first effort to begin outreach to engage people to come to our big Earth Day volunteer clean up in Fall River and New Bedford on April 21st, 2018. Our Sister School is girls 5th-8th grade. The school is such a warm and welcoming environment where the students and teachers are inquisitive and engaging. It was a good first step in public speaking about Groundwork Southcoast, especially for Irlanda, our Americorps TerraCorps Service member who will be doing a lot of outreach this spring and summer. Irlanda, who is pictured talked about immigrating from Cape Verde when she was 11, about her love of sports in high school and about how she didn’t know what to expect when she joined Green Team, but that she loved it. She then asked the girls at OSS if they would like to volunteer with GWSC and they seemed interested and excited! Irlanda is excited too about setting up a special volunteer day just for them! We can’t wait to be able to connect to and work with more schools in Fall River and New Bedford or to engage volunteers to steward the open spaces in our community!
