SIGN #4:
Welcome to Adventure Walk!

This sign is all about how to care for and share the park with native birds and plants

Please don’t feed geese and other water fowl bread!

Are you thinking of helping out Riverside’s geese population by tossing them some bread from the ends of your sandwich or from the back of your cupboard? You might want to reconsider: you’d actually be doing them more harm than good!

To geese and other birds, bread is junk food. It might be easy for them to eat whatever you toss on the ground, but bread lacks everything that a goose needs to be happy and healthy. If given the chance, geese will eat so much bread that they won’t have room for much else!

Riverside’s geese are fed so often by well-meaning visitors, that they probably aren’t eating enough of the things that they should be. The natural diet of a goose is made up of grasses and other plants as well as bugs. A goose that strays from this diet can become unhealthy and even sick. If the bread you feed them is moldy, there’s an even higher chance of them becoming unwell.

Not to mention you might end up feeding more than just geese! Raccoons, opossums, and even rats could come out of hiding to nibble on any leftover bread, and they’ll learn that Riverside Park is the place to be.

It’s better to not feed geese at all than to feed them bread. They might come up to you looking for food, but they really don’t know any better–resist the temptation!
