Meet the Summer 2024 Green Team!

Meet the GWSC 2024 Summer Green Team! This stellar group of young adults has been working to make our community a greener, safer, and more connected place this summer. In addition to urban farming, community engagement, and citizen science work, Green Team has been learning about communications and marketing. In fact, each Green Teamer wrote their bio (below) and designed their graphics using Canva! 🎉

Alana is from New Bedford, is a Green Leader, and has been a part of GWSC for 2 years. She enjoys gardening and plant research in her free time. She attends Bristol County Agricultural High School in Dighton where she studies landscaping. She plans on doing something involving horticulture in the future, and has aspirations of attending college at SUNY Cobleskill in upstate New York.

Amir Antunes, a 2-year member of the Green Team, grew up in New Bedford, MA, within the area GWSC works in. He attends Bristol Community College as a freshman, and is studying business and management. At work, Amir enjoys building equipment we use during our farming and stewardship work. Outside of work, Amir enjoys playing video games and spending time with family.

Cedric (he/him) is a Green Team member and an upcoming junior at BMC Durfee High School. A resident of Fall River for 10 years, he has been with Green Team for 6 months and enjoys hands-on work.

They started working for GWSC in 2017, recently returning from a brief hiatus and is thrilled to have joined back this summer. Jade enjoys working with youth and creating a sustainable environment in their community.

Jayliz is from New Bedford and has been on Green Team for a year. She attends Bristol County Agricultural High School where she majors in Landscape Design and Contracting. Her studies focus on landscaping and design, skills she utilizes frequently at GWSC. She enjoys developing new skills and feels as though she is able to make a change in her community. Jayliz grew up in an EJ community and wants to be able to help others through the struggle while sharing her story to uplift others. Jayliz plans on becoming a psychologist in the future to help those struggling with substance abuse.

He has been with Green Team for 1 year and likes doing hands-on work and working with community members.

Groundwork Southcoast (GWSC) Green Team member intro post: TylerTyler attends Fairhaven High School but grew up in Freetown where his love for nature began. He dedicates his time helping the community and the environment. He spends time researching and studying environmental and political issues along with problems that people of New Bedford face so that he may help them in return. Tyler frequently engages in insightful conversations that are impactful and interesting to people who are willing to make a change, as he is. He looks to be a Park Ranger in the future in order to further his career working with nature.

Groundwork Southcoast (GWSC) Green Team member introduction post: VictoriaVictoria is our newest Green Team hire! She is from Fall River and attends B.M.C Durfee High School. She enjoys reading, music and going to the beach in her free time and plans on pursuing a career that is related to law or psychology in the future. Victoria also enjoys learning new things often and considers herself a jack-of-all-trades!

Groundwork Southcoast (GWSC) addresses Fall River and New Bedford’s structural, economic, environmental, and food system disparities and climate change resilience needs through our youth leadership development employment programs and community engagement. A national initiative with local roots, Groundwork Southcoast was founded in 2017 to be a part of the transformation of two Massachusetts Gateway cities in the southeastern part of the state by working at the intersection of the environment, equity, and civic engagement.
